Algeria repatriates 2,536 Niger refugees

Algeria said on Thursday that 2,536 Nigerien refugees have been sent back to their country of origin since last December, at the request of their government.

Addressing members of the lower house of parliament, Minister of Solidarity Monia Meslem explained that the repatriation process included 2,536 Nigerien refugees who have been carried to reception centers in the southernmost province of Tamanrasset, on border with Niger, before being sent to their country of origin.

The minister stressed that the authorities are keen to "ensure decent living conditions for all people present on the national territory without any distinction, especially when it comes to those whose countries endure difficult situation," in reference to Syrian refugees.

The government of Niger requested its Algerian counterpart to repatriate its nationals who entered Algeria illegally.

As many as 413 refugees left Algeria on Thursday and went back to Niger. It is the tenth batch of the Nigerian nationals who have been sent back to their country of origin since last December. Endit
