Big blow as injury rules South Africa's Coetzee out of 2015 Africa Cup

Xinhua, January 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Head Coach of South Africa, Shakes Mashaba has disclosed that their defender Rivaldo Coetzee will miss the remaining part of the on-going 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Mashaba revealed on Wednesday that the defender sustained an injury to his knee on Monday during their 3-1 loss to Algeria in a Group C match played at the Ebebiyin Stadium.

"The young man is in big pain and the medical team handle it. I have ruled the young man out unless miracle happens," said the veteran coach who guided the team without a loss in the qualification campaign for the competition.

Mashaba reasoned that in the absence of the 18-year-old who is making a debut in an Afcon competition, Erick Mathoho will be the replacement.

Bafana Bafana, who won the Afcon title in 1996 when they hosted, need to recover and stop Senegal on Friday if they hope to improve their chances of qualification for the knock-out stage. Senegal are second in the Group C after stopping Ghana 2-1 in their opening match. Endite
