Gulf countries condemn "coup d'etat" in Yemen by Houthis

Xinhua, January 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Gulf foreign ministers on Wednesday condemned what they called "a coup d'etat" in Yemen by Houthis and announced steps to be taken to protect Yemen's security, stability and vital interests, Al Arabiya news reported.

The announcement came after Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) foreign ministers held an emergency meeting in Riyadh.

The GCC, which which consists of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, announced their support for the Yemeni President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi and called upon Houthis to stop the use of force in all areas under their control and cooperate in the political process.

The announcement also came a day after the Shiite Huthi fighters seized the presidential palace. Houthis, who demand more rights for the country's Zyadi Shiite Muslims, seized Sanaa in September and advanced into central and western parts of the country where Sunni Muslims predominate. Endit
