Portugal plans to donates 73,000 packages of medication to Sao Tome and Principe

Pharmaceutical companies in Portugal plan this year to donate 73,000 packages of medication to the West African archipelago of Sao Tome and Principe, Portuguese news agency Lusa reported Wednesday.

The donation follows an agreement signed by Portuguese health authorities with the Sao Tome and Principe government and focuses on a list of 236 drugs considered to be essential for the archipelago's needs this year.

Last December the Sao Tome government asked the Portuguese government, via the National Authority for Medication and Health Products (Infarmed) for a list of 236 drugs to be used at Dr. Aires de Menezes Central Hospital in Sao Tome.

"This donation is only for medication that will be donated by the pharmaceutical industry," a source from Infarmed told Lusa, adding "The Sao Tome and Principe Health Ministry attached a list of other hospital materials which may be part of the product portfolios of donor laboratories."

"The donors expect to send the first container of medication to Sao Tome and Principe at the end of February," the source said. Enditem
