MINUSMA to fulfil its mandate in Mali despite terrorist attacks

Xinhua, January 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) "remains determined to accomplish its mandate despite being faced with terrorist attacks," its deputy chief Arnauld Antoine Akodjenou said Monday.

"MINUSMA will work tirelessly to restore stability and peace, in collaboration with local, regional and international forces," Akodjenou said when he visited Mali's northern town of Kidal.

The declaration comes following Saturday's attack that targeted a MINUSMA camp in Kidal, during which a Chadian peacekeeper was killed while four others were injured.

"Akodjenou's visit to Kidal was meant to demonstrate solidarity with MINUSMA personnel," a statement from the UN mission said.

"The terrorist attack against MINUSMA camp had exceptional gravity and it was of unprecedented extent since establishment of MINUSMA in Mali. It was deliberately meant to destabilize our activities, especially those related to peace," the statement added.

In Kidal, MINUSMA particularly focuses on facilitating inter- community dialogue and improving local people's daily lives, two activities that contribute to peace consolidation and socioeconomic development in the region, the statement concluded. Endi
