Cote d'Ivoire to experiment customary diplomacy in Central African Republic

Xinhua, January 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cote d'Ivoire will experiment customary diplomacy in Central African Republic to help the latter find a lasting solution to its recurrent political crises, Cote d'Ivoire experts said Monday.

"We went to Central African Republic on invitation of the UN High Commission for Refugees and a local non-governmental organization. We examined the country's socio-cultural situation to have a better understanding of the problem," one of the experts, Prof. Urbain Amoa, said.

Amoa said the Central African Republic's crisis is deep and is motivated by hidden causes such as poverty, religion and governance.

He said his team proposed use of Cote d'Ivoire's customary diplomacy model to find a lasting solution to the challenges facing Central African Republic.

Customary or traditional diplomacy is based on holding prior negotiations before issues are taken to the "public place." The model has already proven very effective in resolution of a number of inter-ethnic conflicts in Africa. Endi
