Syrian crisis solution should stress reconciliation: IPU chief

Xinhua, January 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Political solution to the Syrian crisis should highlight national reconciliation and the rights of the Syrian people, Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) chief said here on Saturday.

Martin Chungong, IPU secretary general, made the remarks after meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil.

"If there is to be any serious chance of tackling this dangerous and rapidly expanding phenomenon, there needs to be an end to the Syrian conflict and a genuine commitment to national reconciliation," he said.

"The parliament's role at the national and international levels is to bring about national reconciliation, end violence and protect the security and rights of the Syrian people," he added.

Chungong, along with the IPU delegation, are on their way to Syria in a bid to help achieve a peaceful settlement of the Syrian predicament.

In Beirut, the IPU head also met with Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam and Speaker Nabih Berri over the latest developments in the region. Endit
