Chile's Gallegos wins ninth stage of Dakar Rally quad division

Chilean quad racer Victor Gallegos Tuesday won the ninth stage of the 2015 Dakar Rally in his division while his compatriot Ignacio Casale lost his overall lead to Poland's Rafal Sonik.

The day's race covered a 450km special stage between the Chilean towns of Iquique and Calama, the last destination in Chile before the rally heads into Argentina Wednesday.

Gallegos got off to a rocky start, but surprised rivals by recovering to trail behind Sonik, before overtaking him on the dunes of Chile's Atacama desert with a time of 6 hours 31 minute and 46 seconds. It was his first ever stage win at the Dakar.

Sonik crossed the finish line more than 15 minutes behind Gallegos, but nearly nine minutes ahead of Casale, who came in 26 minutes and 24 seconds behind the day's winner. Endi
