96,000 couples in China's Guangdong allowed to have second baby

About 96,000 couples in south China's Guangdong Province have been given permission to have a second child, local health and family planning authorities said on Tuesday.

A pilot program in east China's Zhejiang Province was launched in January 2014, following the easing of the one-child policy, allowing couples to have a second child if either parent was an only child, as a result couples nationwide may now have a second child.

Guangdong, China's economic powerhouse, began to accept second child petitions last year.

The National Health and Family Planning Commission predicts that China would see more second child applications this year than in 2014.
