Australia smash Oman 4-0 in Asian Cup

Xinhua, January 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Australia thrashed Oman 4-0 in the second round of Asian Cup group stage here on Tuesday.

The Socceroos and South Korea both reached the knockout stage.

Australia made a bright start against Oman with over 50 thousand home audience watching at the Stadium Australia.

The Socceroos took a 1-0 lead from a corner kick in the 27th minute. Matt Mckay connected a pass from Trent Sainsbury to tick the ball into net.

Robbie Kruse soon helped the Socceroos expand their advantage as he sprinted to fire home the ball after taking a penetrating flick pass from Massimo Luongo in front of the penalty area.

In the added time, Mark Milligan's shot was disallowed but the referee pointed to the penalty kick spot instead. Milligan converted the penalty to give Australia a comfortable 3-0 lead in the first half.

Tomi Juric's goal in the second half earned the Socceroos a 4-0 victory thanks to Mathew Leckie's pass.

Oman and Kuwait, who lost to South Korea 1-0 in an earlier match, were knocked out of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup after both suffered two straight defeats. Endi
