Security level raised in select areas of Belgium

Xinhua, January 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

The security level has been raised in certain "sensitive" locations in Belgium, including the Jewish quarter of Antwerp, Xinhua learned Friday from the office of spokesman of Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel.

The increased security comes after two attacks in France by radical Islamists.

Belgian public radio RTBF said the level of security would be raised this Friday night in the Jewish quarter of Antwerp, a district commonly known for the diamond trade, from level two to level three. Friday marks the beginning of the Jewish Sabbath.

On Wednesday, the Council of Information and Security estimated that the security level in Belgium would not to be raised after the attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris which left 12 dead. The council believed security should stay at a level two on a scale that goes up to level four. Endit
