Juncker highlights Latvia's achievements at launch event for European Year for Development

Latvia is one of the EU member states that have achieved excellent results in development cooperation, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said here at a ceremony launching the European Year for Development 2015 on Friday.
The head of the European Commission said that Latvia as a nation had shown excellent performance in development cooperation.
Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, in turn, indicated that Latvia is the EU's success story as it is one of the fastest growing EU economies and has become a member of NATO.
"This successful experience could not be possible without support from the EU and other countries. Everyone needs such success stories. With its experience, Latvia is supporting Eastern and Central European countries' development," the Latvian premier said.
The official ceremony for launching the European Year for Development 2015 took place at the Latvian National Library on Friday in the margins of the opening of the presidency of the European Council. It was held in order to promote the European Year for Development and draw public attention to results of the EU's development cooperation.
The aim of the Year for Development 2015 is to raise awareness among the general public on the development cooperation policy of the EU, including Latvia, and its results, as well as explaining its significance and benefits to all stakeholders.
Latvia is holding the rotating EU presidency in the first half of 2015. Endit
