EU congratulates Sirisena on election as Sri Lankan president

European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini here on Friday congratulated Maithripala Sirisena on his election as President of Sri Lanka.

"The EU looks forward to working with him to further develop its relations with Sri Lanka," she said in a statement.

She noted that the EU will continue to support Sri Lanka in its development as a prosperous and inclusive democracy for the benefit of all its citizens.

Sirisena, a former health minister, claimed victory in Thursday's presidential election. Endit
