Weekend storm warnings issued in Austria

Xinhua, January 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Foehn winds in Austria over the weekend are expected to reach gale forces of up to 100 km per hour as well as bring rain, snow, and unusually mild temperatures, the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) said in a storm warning Friday.

The warning heeded that "one storm front after another" was currently moving from the Atlantic Ocean to northern Europe and passing partly through Austria.

"The weather on the weekend will therefore be very changeable," said meteorologist Stefan Kiesenhofer, adding that strong to gale-force winds could be expected in most of the country until Sunday.

The gale is expected to be between 80 and 100 km per hour in many regions and higher in mountain areas and exposed locations.

The storm front is also expected to bring both mild and cold air to Austria, with uncharacteristically mild air on Saturday expected to increase maximum temperatures around the country to between eight and 15 degrees Celsius.

Snowfall is also expected to fluctuate, the snow line increasing to above 2,000 meters on Saturday and falling more heavily on Sunday to where it will even reach several valleys. Endit
