This picture of a railway carriage traveling from Beijing to Guangzhou stems from 1950. The Ministry of Railways was established after the founding of the People's Republic of China on Oct. 1, 1949. By the end of that year, the ministry had repaired 8,278-km of railway line and 2,717 bridges, with traffic mileage reaching up to 21,810 kilometers. [File photo] |
