Int'l Partnership on City Waste Water Technology Transfer

The implementing agencies of this partnership include:

UNEP

UNEP DEPI is the implementing division for the supervision and management of the project by the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA). The GPA will provide overall guidance and room for synergy and linkages with the Global Partnership on Wastewater Management.

UNEP DRC/ROAP will sign an ICA with DEPI and will provide international contacts with countries for the smooth implementation of the project.

UNEP China Office will provide coordination and management of the project. A junior staff in China Office and consultants will be setup to be responsible for assessing and monitoring project implementing of key studies of the value of waste water treatment to the economic development at the city-scale and providing communication and coordination between local and international partners.

UNEP International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP) is a global center on ecosystem management for all developing countries and will provide technical support to DEPI and UNEP Beijing Office in deliberation of project activities with a focus on promoting China-Africa cooperation

National partners

China Beijing Environment Exchange (CBEEX) will function as the platform of technology exchange for the engagement of private sectors and experts on technology information collection and screening, case studies, and will serve as national PMO to provide daily management and implement of the project activities in China.

For technical resources on city level, UNEP has a MOU with Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and has also established good relationship with many municipal cities in China, such as Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen. Local environmental protection bureaus and water administrations will be engaged to provide substantial support and technology from private sectors.

For technical exchange between China and Africa, UNEP has engaged with the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST) to build the capacity of African countries under the UNEP-China-Africa environment program, some of the on-going projects were focused on building the African capacity on re-use of waste water, water quality and waste water treatment. The cooperating partners from China are Tongji-UNEP IESD and the Water Resources Research Institute in Gansu which could engage in the project for showcase to scale up.
