Confirmed AH1N1 Infections Rise to 16 in Colombia

The number of infections with the A/H1N1 virus in Colombia rose to 16 on Tuesday, after health authorities confirmed three more cases.

The new cases were found in the northwestern Antioquia Department. According to the regional governor, Luis Alfredo Ramos, the patients were sick after returned from a trip to the United States.

"All the cases are under control of the sanitary authorities and they are not a risk for the community and the citizens," Ramos said.

The patients have been isolated and their relatives are under medical observance together with other eight people for possible infections, Ramos added.

Among the 16 confirmed cases in Colombia, 10 were infected outside the country.

According to the World Health Organization, a total of 12,954 people have been infected with the virus in 46 countries. The United States has the most infections with 6,764 confirmed cases.
