G77: Developed Countries to Come Through

The only thing developed countries have to do now is to fulfill their commitments, said the coordinator of the Group of 77 (G77) at the Doha conference on Thursday.

"When it comes to political statements, developed countries are ready to support, but when it comes to figures, they are not fulfilling their commitments," said Larbi Djacta, Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations and Minister Counselor in charge of the G77, the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations.

At the Doha conference, the G77 aims to obtain new outcomes on how to implement the commitments made so far within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said Djacta. "The means of implementation is now our biggest concern."

According to Djacta, the means of implementation refers to supporting developing countries financially, helping them in the field of technology and enhancing their capacities, which could make it possible for them to adapt to the challenge of climate change and enable their capacities to face its adverse impact.

"We're expecting developed countries to put in more money, but not only to finance projects," said Djacta. "The projects have a limited impact and we need their help to enhance our capacities to address climate change."
