Six heavily polluting industries in 47 prefecture-level cities will have to comply with new special emission limits on airborne pollutants, according to new policies made by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

Affected industries include thermal power, iron and steel, petrochemicals, cement, non-ferrous metal and chemicals, and cover 47 prefecture-level cities in 19 provinces.

Thermal power tops the list of impacted six industries industries. According to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC), most thermal power plants across China have been equipped with desulfurizing devices since 2008, but some didn’t do that in order to reduce costs.

“The new policy will help control air pollution. Difficult issues like supervision and high costs may be concerned during the implementation of the policy. ”

An environmental expert told Securities Daily, “It calls for a Herculean effort to fundamentally improve air quality”.
