McDermott's colleague Professor Douglas Woodward compared Silicon Valley with China's Shenzhen in terms of innovative clusters and economic rivalry in the digital age. He said, "The two places share three main characteristics: unparalleled engineering talent, efficient input sharing and deep supply linkages, and enhanced knowledge flows and information spillovers. They will both play a significant role in the digital age, with potentially exponential growth in productivity based on pervasive, interconnected computing power, massive digital information, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and robotics."
