Libyan army dismantles terrorist cells in Benghazi

Xinhua,December 20, 2017 Adjust font size:

TRIPOLI, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan eastern-based army has dismantled a number of terrorist networks responsible for assassinations and bombings in the eastern city of Benghazi, a military source said Wednesday.

The terrorist cells and criminal elements dismantled admitted "assassinations and bombing on government institutions and security headquarters over the past few years," an army officer said.

Some of the arrested have provided classified information to terrorist groups during the control of the army forces on neighborhoods and towns in Benghazi to target the army, the officer added.

Security and military services in the city have contributed in the weeks-old process.

Benghazi, Libya's second largest city and the birthplace of the 2011 uprising that toppled former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has witnessed a three-year war between the army led by General Khalifa Haftar and extremist groups.

Haftar announced in June the takeover of the entire city of Benghazi after the defeating of the rival armed groups. However, some militants still remain in the city and mainly use landmines to cause damage. Enditem
