Turkey's president calls for backing of UN resolution on Jerusalem

Xinhua,December 20, 2017 Adjust font size:

ANKARA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday calls on UN member nations to back a draft resolution on the status of Jerusalem, a day after the U.S. vetoed it at the UN Security Council (UNSC).

"I invite once again all UN member nations to defend the historical status of Jerusalem," Erdogan said during a joint news conference with his Djiboutian counterpart Ismail Omar Guelleh in Ankara.

Turkey will continue to follow the development on this issue until the end, Erdogan stressed.

On Monday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed regrets in a statement about the U.S. veto of the resolution, saying the move "reveals once again that this country is no more objective."

The United States, a permanent member of the UNSC, vetoed Monday a draft resolution that rejected the establishment of diplomatic facilities in Jerusalem, while the other 14 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the Egypt-drafted text. Enditem
