Turkey says U.S. possible relocation of embassy to Jerusalem "extremely worrying"

Xinhua,December 05, 2017 Adjust font size:

ANKARA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Tuesday the U.S. potential move to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital is "extremely worrying."

"The decision is completely against Jerusalem's religious and historical status, international agreements and UN decisions," Kalin said on his Twitter account.

"Such a step will disrupt the peace process in the Middle East and cause new tensions and conflicts in the region. Keeping the status of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque has vital importance," he said.

Kalin called on the U.S. administration "not to make such fatal mistake."

The Turkish government spokesperson Bekir Bozdag warned the U.S. move to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli capital would be a "disaster" for the region, and lead to new conflicts.

Last week the U.S. President Donald Trump was reportedly mulling the imminent relocation of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and formal recognition of the city as Israel's capital. Enditem
