Kenya's bourse key index hits new high as it sustains upward trend

Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) 20 Share Index sustained an upward trend Thursday as it rose 20 points to clock a new high of 3,195.70, up from 3,175.41.

The increase was the second in a row. On Wednesday, the index rose 33 points to 3,175.41 boosted by growth in local investors' trading amid increase in top stock share prices.

Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecom, was the day's biggest mover after trading 19 million shares, going up 0.8 percent to trade at 0.19 dollars. The telecom on Wednesday announced a profit of 427 million dollars causing excitement among investors.

Oil marketer KenolKobil came in second with 6.5 million shares at 0.12 dollars while Cooperative Bank was third with 5 million shares.

NSE All Share Index, similarly, rose to 137.64 from 135.88 while the NSE 25 Share Index closed the day at a high of 3.620.80.

At the bond segment, trading surged considerably to 34 million U.S. dollars, up from 24 million in the previous session. Endit
