Coalition government in Armenia set to continue

The ruling Republican Party of Armenia and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Party (ARF) agreed on Thursday to continue their cooperation in a coalition government, Armenian news agency Armenpress reported.
The two parties were already in the government together since February of 2016 following the adoption of a new constitution through a referendum in December 2015. The constitution puts the country on course to become a parliamentary republic by April 2018.
The Republican Party, led by President Serzh Sargsyan, won a parliamentary majority in the parliamentary elections in early April and is well within the capacity of forming a cabinet on its own. However, the two partner parties opted to continue sharing responsibility for the governance as the country makes its transition to a parliamentary system.
On April 2, Armenia held its first parliamentary election since the adoption of constitutional reforms in December 2015. The Republican Party won 49.15 percent of votes while its junior coalition partner ARF garnered 6.58 percent of votes. Endite
