Xinhua, May 10, 2017 Adjust font size:

Two vehicles collided in a township in the U.S. state of Michigan, killing five people and critically injuring three others, local media reported Wednesday.

A vehicle traveling southbound in Oceola Township in Livingston County ran a stop sign and crashed into an eastbound vehicle late Tuesday night, local media quoted Michigan State Police as saying.

One vehicle caught fire, while the other rolled at least one time, the report said.

With each vehicle carrying four people, three people were killed and the driver was in critical condition in the eastbound vehicle; two were killed and the other two were in critical condition in the southbound vehicle, it added.

Investigators were on the scene on Wednesday morning to investigate the cause of the accident.

Both vehicles were traveling at speeds of at least 55 miles per hour when the accident happened, the posted speed limits for the roads, ClickOnDetroit.com quoted the police as saying.

Pictures posted on its website showed a twisted stop sign lies on the lawn beside the intersection of two roads.

Michigan State police will release more details about the crash later Wednesday, the report said. Endit
