Higher transport cost pushes Ghana's April inflation to 13 pct

Inflation rate for Ghana inched up 0.2 percentage points to 13.0 percent year-on-year during the month of April, relative to the 12.8 percent year-on-year inflation rate recorded in March 2017, Ghana's Statistical office announced here on Wednesday.

The month-on-month inflation rate for April 2017 was 1.6 percent, compared with the 1.3 percent recorded for the previous month, said Baah Wadieh, acting government statistician.

"The year-on-year non-food inflation rate for April 2017 was 16.3 percent compared with the 15.6 percent recorded in March 2017, while the year-on-year food inflation rate during the month under review was 6.7 percent, compared with 7.3 percent recorded during the previous month," Wadieh added.

"The rise in the inflation rate from 12.8 percent in March 2017 to 13.0 percent in April 2017 was mainly due to the rise in inflation rate for the transport sector which went up by 6.9 percentage points. Both the communications sector and miscellaneous goods and services also went up, each by 0.1 percentage points," Wadieh added. Endit
