Xinhua summary of Asia-Pacific stocks news at 1100 GMT, May 10

Chinese shares returned to losses Wednesday following a short-lived rebound the previous trading day as toughened financial supervision continued to drain liquidity and investors chose caution.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index (SCI) went down 0.9 percent to end the day at 3,052.78 points. The smaller Shenzhen Component Index shed 1.3 percent at 9,756.81 points.

SYDNEY -- The Australian market has rallied on Wednesday, finishing higher after suffering losses in morning trade.

At the close of trade, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 32.40 points or 0.55 percent at 5,872.30, while the broader All Ordinaries index gained 33.60 points of 0.57 percent at 5,908.10.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower on Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) dropped 22.64 points, or 0.99 percent, to settle at 2,270.12.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Wednesday as the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar lifted exporters amid hopes for further solid earnings reports from Japan Inc. this week.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 57.09 points, or 0.29 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 19,900.09.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 126.39 points, or 0.51 percent, to 25,015.42 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 24,931.82 and 25,164.97.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 90.16 points on Wednesday, down 0.21 points or 0.23 percent against the previous trading session.

A total of over 62.919 million shares worth some 652.869 billion Vietnamese dong (some 28.89 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, an increase of 8.2 percent in volume and 10.36 percent in value against the previous trading session.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Wednesday unchanged compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index remained at 1,031.98 points after closing. A total of 36,600 shares worth about 187 million Lao kip (22,860 U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

MUMBAI -- The Indian stock market closed higher Wednesday.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 30,248.17, 314.92 points or 1.05 percent up compared to its previous close at 29,933.25.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed lower by 44.04 points, or 0.77 percent, to a level of 5,653 on Wednesday.
