Tokyo stocks open higher as yen's retreat gives exporters a boost

Tokyo stocks opened higher Wednesday as the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar gave export-linked issues a boost.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 55.69 points, or 0.28 percent, from Tuesday to 19,898.69.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 2.90 points, or 0.18 percent, to 1,584.67.

Iron and steel, electric power and gas, and nonferrous metal-linked issues comprised notable gainers in early deals. Endit
