U.S. dollar rises on upbeat jobs data

Xinhua, May 9, 2017 Adjust font size:

The U.S. dollar increased against other major currencies on Tuesday as recent jobs data from the country came out positive.

U.S. Labor Department said on Tuesday that the number of job openings was little changed at 5.743 million on the last business day of March.

Earlier this month, the Labor Department announced that U.S. total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 211,000 in April, beating market estimates, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.4 percent.

Analysts said the overall upbeat jobs data bolstered market speculation for a rate-hike in June.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was up 0.56 percent at 99.616 in late trading.

In late New York trading, the euro dipped to 1.0866 dollars from 1.0931 dollars, and the British pound declined to 1.2925 dollars from 1.2947 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar decreased to 0.7333 U.S. dollar from 0.7388 U.S. dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 114.27 Japanese yen, higher than 113.03 yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar added to 1.0090 Swiss francs from 0.9983 Swiss franc, and it edged up to 1.3790 Canadian dollars from 1.3690 Canadian dollars. Enditem
