Austria has increased its deportations of denied asylum seekers by 77 percent year-over-year for the first four months of 2017, the Ministry of the Interior said in a press release on Tuesday.

This equates to 2,291 people who were deported, compared to the 1,295 over the same period in 2016.

A further 1,459 people left the country of their own accord, bringing the total number of persons who left due to not having a right to stay in the country to 3,750.

The ministry also revealed that a significant drop in the overall number of asylum applications was recorded, falling from 18,597 between January and April 2016, to 8,388 over the same period this year. Enditem
