Namibia by the end of 2018 is expected to have 184 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy and this will make up 27 percent of the total installed capacity for the country, according to the Electricity Control Board (ECB) on Tuesday.
The country's electricity regulator on Tuesday at a media briefing said Namibia has managed to commission power plants with a total capacity of 30 MW from independent power producers to date, and anticipates for a total capacity of 83 MW of renewable energy in the short term.
ECB CEO Foibe Namene further revealed that an additional 101 MW is expected to be commissioned in the next 18 months comprising of the Hardap Solar PV tender (37MW) and three unsolicited projects (64MW).
Meanwhile Namene said that the power situation in the country and southern Africa region has been stable over the last 12 months due to new generation capacity added on the grid as well as good rainfalls received for hydro power generation. Endit
