French President-elect Macron resigns as party chief

French President-elect Emmanuel Macron has resigned from the presidency of his En Marche! (On the Move!) party, the party's secretary general Richard Ferrand said on Monday.

The decision was made on Monday morning at an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors of the party founded by Macron in April 2016, Ferrand said at a press conference.

The name of the party will be changed to La Republique en march (The Republic on the Move) with the goal of "consolidating the base" of the political movement, according to Ferrand.

Catherine Barbaroux, who has been involved in the party since its inception, is appointed as acting president.

For the forthcoming legislative elections in June, the party will nominate one candidate for each of the 577 seats in the National Assembly, the lower house of the French parliament, and the candidates will be known by May 11, Ferrand revealed.

"At least 50 percent of our candidates will come from civil society, at least 50 percent women," he added. Endit
