U.S. drone strike kills 8 militants in E. Afghanistan

Xinhua, May 5, 2017 Adjust font size:

Eight militants of Islamic State (IS) group were killed after a U.S. drone struck a militants' hideout in Achin district of eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, the provincial government said on Friday.

"The strike took place in Surkamar locality, Mahmmand Dara village Thursday night, and among the killed militants was an IS group commander named Homayoun," it said in a statement.

Achin is the stronghold of IS militants in the province, 120 km east of Afghan capital of Kabul. It has been the scene of clashes between security forces and IS militants since the emergence of IS there in early 2015.

On Wednesday, eight Afghan civilians were killed and 27 persons, including three foreign soldiers of the NATO-led forces, were wounded after an IS suicide car bombing struck a military convoy near U.S. embassy in Kabul. Endit
