India's Supreme Court Friday confirmed the death sentence given to four men convicted of the brutal and fatal gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in Delhi in 2012.

The case has triggered nationwide protests and led to stringent anti-rape laws.

The four men - Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh - were found guilty in the case by a special court in September 2013. The death sentence of the four men was upheld by the Delhi High Court in March 2014, following which they had appealed in the Supreme Court.

Three years on, confirming the death penalty of the four men, a three-judge bench of the apex court said: "Taking note of the serious injuries, the severe nature of offense committed by the convicts, we are upholding the sentence." Endit
