U.S. trade deficit narrows in March

U.S. trade deficit narrowed in March while both exports and imports declined in the month, showed data released on Thursday.

The trade deficit reached 43.7 billion U.S. dollars in March, down 0.1 billion dollars from February, the Commerce Department said.

In the month, exports declined 0.9 percent to 191 billion dollars, the biggest drop since October, while imports fell 0.7 percent to 234.7 billion dollars, it said.

Goods-trade gap with China increased to 24.6 billion dollars in March from 23 billion dollars in February. U.S. trade deficit with Mexico also widened to 7 billion dollars in the month, the highest since November 2007.

In the first quarter, U.S. trade deficit increased 7.5 percent year on year, with exports and imports both up 7.1 percent at the same period, according to the Commerce Department. Endit
