Science, innovation essential to tackling migration, says EU commissioner

Xinhua, May 4, 2017 Adjust font size:

The role of research, science and innovation is essential to looking at the root causes of migration, and solve the problem, said European Commissioner Carlos Moedas on Thursday.

"Tools in science and innovation can help us to make a better world, and build bridges," he told a ministerial conference on strengthening Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

"This will include finding out not only the effects but also transit destination and origins. All this requires data that needs to be analyzed," Moedas added.

Ministers recognized the urgent need for action to address migration flows across the Mediterranean, said Chris Agius, Maltese parliamentary secretary for research, innovation, youth and sport.

Studying the root causes of migration is a means toward tackling part of the challenge and the ministers are committed to research playing a role in this regard, he added.

Participants also adopted a declaration reiterating their commitment to addressing the root causes of irregular migration and forced displacement resulting from state fragility and insecurity, as well as from demographic, economic and environmental trends. Endit
