Spain's car sales rise by 1.1 pct in April

Xinhua, May 3, 2017 Adjust font size:

Spain's car sales rose by 1.1 percent in April when compared with the same month of a year earlier, according to data released on Wednesday by organizations of the sector.

The Association of Car Manufacturers (ANFAC), the Federation of Association of Dealers of the Automotive sector (FACONAUTO) and the Association of Car Dealers (GANVAM) reported that purchases reached 101,375 in the fourth month of the year.

Purchases made by individuals fell by 14.4 percent in April year-on-year to a total of 44,306 units. Meanwhile, renting companies bought a total of 28,633 units, up 35.8 percent year-on-year and companies registered a total of 28,436 new units in April, registering an annual increase of 3.7 percent.

GANVAM president, Juan Antonio Sanchez Torres, said "without any incentive" individuals prefer to use their old car, undermining "the pace of market growth."

Adolfo Randulfe, communication director at ANFAC commented that "we must not lose sight of the stagnation in purchases by individuals."

Industry organizations also reported that in the first four months of 2017 there were a total of 409,286 purchases, which meant a 6.1 percent rise on the same period last year. It is the best four-month period of the beginning of the year since 2009, according to the organizations.

However, the organizations noted that it was still far below pre-crisis figures as in 2008, 471,303 units were purchased and in 2007 the figure was 532,346. Endit
