U.S. drone strike kills 8 IS militants in eastern Afghanistan

Xinhua, May 1, 2017 Adjust font size:

Some eight militants of the Islamic State (IS) group were killed after an unmanned U.S. plane fired a missile at a running vehicle in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, the provincial government said Monday.

"The airstrike took place on Mano locality of Chaparhar province roughly at 2:00 p.m. local time Sunday and one vehicle was also destroyed by the raid," it said in a statement.

The mountainous province with Jalalabad city as its capital, 120 km east of Kabul, has been the scene of clashes between security forces and IS militants since the emergence of IS there in early 2015.

On April 13, the U.S. forces in Afghanistan struck an IS cave complex using the largest non-nuclear bomb in the neighboring mountainous Achin district, killing nearly 100 IS fighters and destroying a militant hideout together with several bunkers and tunnels.

The militant group has yet to make comment. Endit
