U.S. congressional leaders reach deal to fund gov't through Sept.

Xinhua, May 1, 2017 Adjust font size:

U.S. congressional leaders have reached a deal to fund the government through the end of September, according to local media.

The bipartisan agreement includes 12.5 billion U.S. dollars in new military spending and 1.5 billion dollars more for border security, the Washington Post reported on Sunday night, adding that Congress is expected to vote on the broad spending package early this week.

The money for border security will be spent on technology and on repairing existing infrastructure, but it can not be used to pay for the construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border that U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"This agreement is a good agreement for the American people and takes the threat of a government shutdown off the table," Senate minority leader Charles Schumer said Sunday night.

"The bill ensures taxpayer dollars aren't used to fund an ineffective border wall, excludes poison pill riders and increases investments in programs that the middle class relies on, like medical research, education and infrastructure," he said.

The spending package comes after the U.S. Congress approved a stopgap funding bill last week to avert a government shutdown and leave lawmakers another week to work out spending details for the rest of the current fiscal year which ends Sept. 30. Endi
