Kenya inflation rises to 11.48 pct in April

Xinhua, April 28, 2017 Adjust font size:

Kenya's overall inflation increased to 11.48 percent in April from 10.28 percent in March driven by increases in several food items due to prevailing drought conditions, the statistics bureau said on Friday.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) computed using the geometric mean approach increased by 1.79 percent from 182.98 in March to 186.24 in April.

The bureau said between March and April, Food and Non-Alcoholic Drinks' Index increased by 3.55 percent.

"This was mainly attributed to increase in prices of several food items including sukuma wiki (kales), spinach, maize flour, milk, potatoes, cabbages, onions and maize grain," KNBS said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

The bureau said the increase in food prices was partly contributed by prevailing drought conditions. The year on year food inflation stood at 20.98 percent in April.

Despite a notable fall in the cost of kerosene, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels' index, increased by 0.63 percent partly due to increase in cost of house rents, other cooking fuels and water services.

According to the bureau, transport index decreased by 0.22 percent in April compared to March mainly on account of decrease in the pump of petrol and diesel.

The prices were obtained from selected retail outlets in 25 data collection zones located in Nairobi and 13 other urban centres. Endit
