Ukraine launches major police reform

Xinhua, April 27, 2017 Adjust font size:

The Ukrainian government has launched a major police reform to bring the country's law enforcement system closer to European standards, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said Thursday.

"We are officially starting the project of the police reform in Ukraine, which is implemented with the support of the European Union (EU)," Avakov told reporters, while presenting the reform project.

During the first stage of the reform that will last for 18 months, police officers from western, eastern and central Ukraine will undergo a series of trainings to boost their professional skills and improve communication with people, Avakov said.

Besides, the initial stage of the reform envisages a renovation of 20 out of 700 police stations in Ukraine, he added.

The EU has allocated 6 million euros (about 6.5 million U.S. dollars) for the implementation of the first stage of the reform. Endi
