Brazil arrests 9 after spectacular robbery in Paraguay

Xinhua, April 26, 2017 Adjust font size:

Brazilian police announced Tuesday the arrest of nine people suspected of a spectacular robbery on a private security company in Paraguay in which they allegedly fled with around 40 million U.S. dollars.

In a statement, Brazil's federal police said that nine people had been arrested on Monday in the state of Parana, having fled there after the robbery in Paraguay's Ciudad del Este on the border with Brazil.

Two of those arrested were injured during a firefight with police, in which three other suspect robbers were killed. Besides the arrests, authorities also seized six guns, explosives, bulletproof jackets, two boats and seven vehicles.

According to press reports, the robber stole around 40 million U.S. dollars but Prosegur, the Spanish company involved, denied this on Tuesday and said the loot was closer to 8 million U.S. dollars. One security guard was killed and another was injured, along with three civilians, in the attack.

Witnesses claimed several of the robbers spoke Portuguese and were members of Primer Comando da Capital (PCC), one of Brazil's foremost criminal gangs. Enditem
