Venezuela's attorney-general Luisa Ortega Diaz Tuesday called on the government and opposition to restart their dialogue to end protests, which have left 26 people dead.
"We need to return to dialogue with valid negotiators with decision-making power, to build an agenda of agreements to allow democratic and institutional results which protect the rule of law," said Ortega Diaz in a report on the protests.
Ortega Diaz said that violent clashes had been seen since April 1 "in the majority of states, except for six," adding that 26 Venezuelans had lost their lives, including "four teenagers and 22 adults."
Ortega Diaz added that, in April so far, 437 people have been injured, 1,289 have been arrested, with 65 having been jailed and 217 to appear in court Tuesday.
After calling for dialogue, Ortega Diaz said that the leaders of both sides needed to "lower the tone of confrontation and raise the level of debate."
She concluded by saying that Venezuela is facing "such complex" socio-economic conditions that "the destruction of public and private property cannot be encouraged, terms of hate cannot be promoted." Enditem
