Number of extremism cases in Swiss army up: report

Xinhua, April 25, 2017 Adjust font size:

50 cases of extremism were reported in the Swiss army last year, 16 more than the number recorded two years ago, Switzerland's department of defence reported on Tuesday.

According to Swiss authorities, most were linked to either far-right extremism (21 cases) or suspected cases of jihadism (15).

Despite the higher number of reported cases in 2016, the confederation's defence department underscored the fact that no major incident was documented, and that no violent act was carried out.

The majority of signalled cases involved isolated individuals, authorities revealed, adding that in 13 cases preventive measures were taken in line with standardized legal procedures.

The Swiss department of defence indicated that similarly to Switzerland's population, the confederation's army must deal with certain societal changes, including increased cases of extremism and radicalization. Endit
