Albania celebrates Orthodox, Catholic Easter amidst unseen tight security

Xinhua, April 16, 2017 Adjust font size:

Christians across Albania celebrated Sunday both Orthodox and Catholic Easter, the most significant and sacred festival of the Christian calendar.

But, unlike previous years, this time the celebrations were held amidst an unseen tight security, with a rare show of police presence, especially in the capital city, Tirana.

Members of the Special Force Elite Unit RENEA were deployed at Mother Teresa international airport on Sunday morning while a high number of police officers were also seen around churches, cathedrals and squares in the city, local media reported.

The tight security measures will remain in place to ensure safety and security while Albanian Christians celebrate Easter, the Resurrection of Christ, a State Police statement said.

Since Albania is known as a Muslim-dominated population, the authorities here decided to increase the alert and the level of security in order to prevent any potential terrorist attack at places of worship, pedestrian malls, sports arenas, concert halls, and public gatherings. Endit
