Ukrainian PM sees economic recovery as biggest government accomplishment

Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said on Tuesday that the recovery of the Ukrainian economy was the biggest accomplishment of his government during its first year in office.

"We came to power amid political and consequently economic crisis, and our main task was to stabilize the economy and put it on the growth path. We have managed to do it," Groysman told reporters during the press conference on the eve of his cabinet's first anniversary in office, which falls on Friday.

Speaking on the key economic indicators, Groysman said the country's gross domestic product grew by 2.3 percent in 2016 compared with a consolidated decline of 16.5 percent over the previous two years, while inflation has slowed down to 12.4 percent last year from 43.3 percent in 2015.

Due to the economic recovery, the average wage in Ukraine has risen by third in the past year, while social standards were up by 16 percent, Groysman said.

Among other achievements of his government, the Premier listed a major road overhaul, energy sector reform, abolishment of 460 administrative barriers for business and progress in fighting corruption.

The Ukrainian parliament has approved the formation of the current cabinet on April 14, 2016, after the previous government was disbanded due to the political crisis and economic turmoil in the country. Endit
