Arrest of fugitive Mexican governor "closes dark chapter," says official

Xinhua, April 11, 2017 Adjust font size:

The recent arrest of a former governor of Mexico's border state of Tamaulipas "closes a dark chapter" in the state's history, the state's current governor said Monday.

The fugitive, Tomas Yarrington, was arrested late Sunday outside a restaurant in Florence, Italy, after his five-year fleeing to escape accusations that he cooperated with the Zetas Cartel and other criminal organizations in money laundering and drug trafficking crimes.

"I think it closes a chapter, a dark chapter in the history of Tamaulipas, but surely it will open others in lines of investigation," current Tamaulipas Governor Cabeza de Vaca said.

Mexico's Proceso magazine reported that U.S. authorities were involved in the apprehension of Yarrington, who once aspired to run for president, and that he will likely be extradited to the U.S. state of Texas.

Mexico's Milenio daily said the ex-governor "denied his identity and showed a fake driver's license" when approached by agents in Italy, adding that he was detained at the Sollicciano Prison in Florence to await extradition. Endi
