Malta implements systematic checks for travel to outside Schengen

The Maltese immigration authorities are implementing systematic checks on all European Union (EU) citizens travelling through Malta to outside the Schengen area, the Maltese authorities revealed on Friday.

Such checks are being carried out for enhanced security reasons to address possible terror threats.

These checks are being carried out in line with the recent amendments to the Schengen Borders Code, which are now in force in all states forming part of the passport-free Schengen Area.

Maltese and other EU citizens will have to pass through a systematic border check when flying to and from airports in Britain and airports outside the EU and the Schengen Area. Endit
