Madagascar labels shrimps to ensure quality for global customers

Madagascar has labeled its shrimps to ensure its customers worldwide, officials said on Thursday.

"This label is to demonstrate that Madagascar is able to offer internationally a product of excellence named Madagascar shrimp," the president of Madagascar shrimp farming and fishing industry association (GAPCM) Claude Brunot said during the launch of the label.

"By this label, the GAPCM shrimp producers and fishermen want to ensure the sanitary and intrinsic taste of their shrimp, guarantee the originality of their product, and ensure the traceability and quality of the products sold and exported by Madagascar," Brunot said.

The GAPCM, grouping 12 companies of shrimp production is an official association approved by Madagascar's government to produce and export shrimp. The association already existed for 22 years and decided to issue a unique label for all shrimps from Madagascar.

"Shrimp production from Madagascar represents only one percent of the world shrimp, but European and Asian market recognize Madagascar's shrimp as the best quality," Brunot explained.

The official said that the country produced in 2016 about 8,600 tons of shrimps, including 4,000 wild shrimps valued at 96 billion Ariary (around 30 million U.S. dollars), and 4,600 tons of farmed shrimps valued at 146 billion Ariary. Endit
